Home » Football NewsFootball: Monday Morning Quarterback - Morehead 2012September 16, 2012 By Kevin McCloskey of Western Alamance High SchoolQuestion: How does one write a MMQB article for a game that one did not attend???
That's what's been going through my mind this weekend... How am I going to do this???
Honorary Winners for this week:
Jennifer kept us up-to-date with game updates via text message on Friday evening. She was blowin' up Kay's phone with those updates just as quick as she could type them!
Abby (Mrs. Coach) brought us the game highlights on video. Don't tell her, but she did such a good job that I am going to brainwash her into shooting video for all games going forward!
So there you have it... I read the texts, reviewed the pictures, and watched the video. Its certainly not as good as being there, but it was enough to get me typing.
You know... I jokingly told someone this weekend that our crew provides better coverage of Warrior Football than most colleges get.
On second thought... That's not a joke. Its the truth!
THANK YOU JENNIFER, ANITA, AND ABBY! On Friday evening, I had several people text me and ask... "Do you wish you were at the game?" The answer was "Yes and no."
Yes - Because I love Warrior Football and there's nothing like being there!
Until the first game update texts started coming in, Kay and I were like little kids on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa to arrive. It was so hard to NOT be at the game.
I've come to the conclusion that Warrior Football is like an incurable disease... Once you catch it, you've got it! And there's no getting rid of it! OK... Now lets talk some football.
5-0 BABY! High Fives for everyone!
WA didn't need to "pull away in the 4th quarter" to win this one. The Warriors did what good teams are supposed to do when playing a game they "should" win. Namely... Jump on them early and take the wind out of their sails. In other words... Kill a fly with a bazooka!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
4 quick TDs and it was 27-0 before you could get a box of popcorn from the Morehead concession stand.
The YAC battered and bruised the Panther defense for 146 yards on 12 carries including touchdown jaunts of 15, 19, and 12 yards.
Donovan gets 2 pictures this week. Of course.... He has to have the "YAC" for all of his "Yards After Contact." ![]() And here is a nice shot of Donovan's 3rd TD as he snuck the ball just inside the pylon. ![]() Co-MVP #2: J-Wil - Justin Wilson
Justin scored on both sides of the ball by hauling in a TD pass from Nigel Carlton and a scintillating Pick-6 interception return for a TD!
Justin already has a nickname (J-Wil) but that's not catchy enough for me so I'm going to give him another this week. He's earned it!
#5 has a flair for the big play and shines the brightest when its "Prime Time." So that's going to be it... Justin Wilson is.... PrimeTime!
Watching PrimeTime's pick-6 on the video highlights caused me to have flashbacks to a certain NFL Hall-of-Famer who was the original PrimeTime.... None other than Deion Sanders.
Oh how I loved watching the ESPN NFL highlights on Sunday evening. When it was time for Deion's highlights to come on the screen, Chris Berman and Tom Jackson would start chanting... "PrimeTime! PrimeTime! PrimeTime!"
I can still hear their voices in my head. And those are the words that came to mind watching Justin take this Pick-6 to the house!
PrimeTime! PrimeTime! PrimeTime!
![]() Now for this week's winner of the "Its The Little Things Award"...
How many times have been told (or told someone else)...
"Take pride in what you do. Whatever you do, give it your best!"
I can tell you one person who does exactly that. This person has caught my eye throughout the season and did so again when I watched this week's video.
At first, all I saw was a blur; a streaking white jersey flying down the field like a guided missile. I had to back up the the video and watch it again to pick out jersey #15, Grantt Mitchell.
Grantt gives it 110% on kick coverage. While its not the most 'glamorous' duty on the team, it is vitally important as it determines field position. And Grantt takes kick coverage as his personal mission to seek out and destroy the opposing ballcarrier.
So Grantt, please know that your extra effort does not go unnoticed. Your are this week's recipient of the "Its The Little Things" award for making a significant impact with your selfless play and hustle.
Congratulations Grantt Mitchell!!!
For all you golfers out there.... Do you recognize this picture??? ![]() This is what is known as "Amen Corner"... A collection of 3 golf holes/shots that are infamous for making (or breaking) the champion of the most prestigious golf tournament in the world... The Masters.
So what exactly does this have to do with Warrior Football???
I'll tell ya... WA is facing its own "Amen Corner" over the next 3 games. A series of games that will set the tone for the rest of the season.
Now I'm not saying that if we win all 3, then we will win the state championship.
And I'm not saying that if we lose all 3, then the season is a disaster. But what I am saying is that this 3 game stretch is critically important to this season. These 3 "Amen Corner" games will set the tone for 2012. In succession...
So Warrior Fans.... We need you for Amen Corner!
And I have 100% confidence that you will show up; stand up; and support this team with the energy and enthusiasm they need and deserve.
And "Amen Corner" begins on Friday night. Who's ready to go Cougar huntin'???
