Girls Cross Country Preview

August 7, 2012
By Nick Holland of Southport High School

Head girls cross country coach Mr. Nathan Fishel knows how good his team really is.

“We have a lot of great runners,” Fishel said. “Semi-State really is where I think we will definitely make it to, probably even to state.”

With the runners Fishel has that came back from last year’s above .500 team, and all his incoming runners this year, Fishel knows that his team will be one of the best in the state.

“The team has a lot of good runners,” Fishel said. “We not only have a good freshmen class, but we also have people who have improved since last year.

The freshmen that Fishel is referring to all have ran cross country in the past. He hopes that freshmen Caroline Chappell, Desiree Kinney, and Shelby Rogers, among others, can bring their experience to the team and in the long run help the team achieve the success that Fishel believes it deserves.

But how exactly is the team going to reach this high expectation of taking a predominantly young class all the way to a semi-state competition?

“A lot of push-ups, abs and being in the weight room,” Fishel said. “I don’t mean just showing up to the weight room, I mean actually putting in work and developing yourself as an athlete.”

Also in order to help his team improve Fishel has set up a system where his older returners, Seniors Carly Chappell and Jazzy Kemp, will lead the team in longer, faster-timed events which Fishel believes will allow his team to lower their times and help their chances of advancing to the state tournament.

You can come and find out just how successful the Lady Cards are in their efforts to improve when they travel to Richmond, Indiana for the annual Richmond Invitational on August 18, at 9:00 a.m.

The Lady Cards hope to do well this season, and hope that you support them along their journey ahead.
