Poole wins sectional title, Dragons advance: Abby Poole shot an 82 to win the individual sectional title at Old Oakland in Oaklandon.

As a team, the Dragons shot 389, four strokes back of champion Mt. Vernon. Greenfield-Central shot 400 to take third place. The top three teams advance.

Cassie Rooks shot 94, Bailey Kamp 102 and Sarah Rose 111 to round out the Dragons' scoring.

"The girls did great," NP coach Gregg Greene said. "I'm very proud of them."

The Dragons advance to the regional as a team for the first time in the girls golf program's history.

The Dragons will compete in next Saturday's regional at Westwood Golf Course in New Castle.

Cross country

NP girls win at FlashRock: New Palestine's girls won the "invite" division of the prestigious FlashRock Invitational at Northview Christian Life Church in Carmel.

The Dragons had two runners -- freshmen Sarah Schwartz and Bailey Wallace -- in the top 10 to clinch the victory.

Schwartz was the runner-up to North Harrison's Ashton Bolser. Schwartz ran the 5K race in 19:53, Bolser in 19:15. Wallace was eighth in 20:36.

Emily Trimpe was 21st, Kayla Medaris 27th and Natalie Shields 30th to round out the Dragons' scoring. The Dragons had 86 points, placing well ahead of second-place Fort Wayne Snider, which had 114.

"It was exciting for the girls to get a win at a big invite with some great competition," NP coach Daniel Weimer said. "Each of the girls competed very well with many team members running personal bests on a championship course.  This is great for our confidence heading into our first championship meet of the season in county."

In the boys race, New Palestine finished 19th out of 25 teams. 

The Dragons competed in the "invite" division. NP's top two runners -- Seth Eagleson and Austin Dodd -- ran as individuals in the "Championship" race. Eagleson finished 21st in 16:02, while Dodd was 124th in 17:11. Twenty-six of the state's top teams ran in the "championship" race.

"The boys team team competed well, running many personal bests across the board," Weimer said. "Seth Eagleson and Austin Dodd gained some great experience competing against some of the best runners in the state. Overall, We were very happy with how we competed today and look forward to county on Tuesday."

In the team race, NP was led by Riley Wilson's 66th place finish. Sam Jones was 88th, Kevin Laetsch 102nd, Chase Tuggle 129th and Chris Poturalski 131st.

Girls soccer

New Palestine 4, Delta 2: The Dragons built a 4-0 lead behind two goals from Kristin Wagner and two assists each from Alyssa Mouzin and Amy Hilton.

Mouzin fed Joray for a first-half goal to make it a 1-0 game, then Wagner scored off Hilton's assist to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The Hilton-to-Wagner connection came together again for the third goal, before Mouzin fed Emily Sitzman for a goal.

Delta scored two late goals, one off a free kick, one off a penalty kick, to close the score.

"It was a nice day for soccer," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "The girls won their game scoring two goals in the first half and two in the second half. We unfortunately had two handballs (one right outside of the penalty area and the other inside) that both resulted in goals from the free kick and penalty kick that Delta took. Delta played very hard today and made it a close game. We are looking forward to playing Franklin Community on Monday."

Holden also cited the play of Molly Carpenter at center back and center midfield as being key in the victory.

NP is now 7-5 and 4-0 in HHC play. The Dragons have now won 22 straight HHC contests.

Volleyball

Dragons go 2-2 at Warren Central: New Palestine went 2-2 at the Warren Central Invitational. 

The Dragons won their last two matches, beating Heritage Christian 25-11, 25-27, 15-9, and then knocking off Tech 25-8, 25-12. In their first two matches, the Dragons fell to Lawrence Central 25-19, 25-23 and Carmel 25-13, 25-14.

Ellen Poetz had 11 aces for the Dragons. Jamie Morris had 32 digs, while Cianna Speth had 26. Katie Morris had nine kills, 10 blocks and 25 assists. Ali Tucker and McKenze Qualkinbush both had 10 kills.

NP is now 9-12 on the season. The Dragons visit Knightstown Tuesday.

Football

Dragon freshmen win: The NPHS freshman football team won 56-6 over Rushville to remain undefeated on the year at 5-0. The JV team did not play, but the JV Dragons are also perfect at 4-0. Both teams play next Monday against Yorktown.
