Central Catholic keeps Preston at quarterback

Central Catholic football coach Kevin O’Shea said the Class A No. 2 Knights will stick with junior Ty Preston at quarterback and move senior Timmy Mills back to receiver for Friday’s game at Benton Central.

Mills was a Class A Junior All-State performer last season, with 28 catches for 671 yards and seven touchdowns. Preston relieved Mills and led a 77-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter last week at Culver Academies, but the Knights missed the 2-point conversion and saw their 48-game winning streak end with a 14-12 loss.

O’Shea said it wasn’t a matter of one quarterback outperforming the other, rather which system was more comfortable for both himself and the players. He also said the change allows Mills to play more on defense and special teams.

“I thought Ty in the fourth quarter, once he settled down, did some things we knew he was capable of,” O’Shea said. “We always knew he could throw the ball. He just had to make the right decisions on a consistent basis.”
