Hancock County Sports

Girls soccer

Greenfield-Central 1, Mt. Vernon 0: Sammie McCoy scored a second-half goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 victory over Mt. Vernon in girls soccer action.

G-C senior goalkeeper Katie Peters made it stand up by making seven saves.

McCoy had five of G-C's eight shots as a focal point of the Cougars' attack.

G-C is now 1-2 on the year and 1-0 in HHC play. The Cougars next play Thursday at Yorktown. MV is 2-1 and 0-1 in conference play. The Marauders are off until an Aug. 28 home match against Shelbyville.

Boys tennis

Greenfield-Central 4, Rushville 1: The Cougars improved to 2-0 on the season by winning their HHC opener over the Lions.

G-C got singles wins from Chris Kersey (7-5, 6-4) and Brandon Hull (6-3, 6-1). At doubles, Max Holtzclaw/Jake Kauth won 6-0, 6-1, while Luke Vowell/Bailey Hull won 6-0-, 6-4.

G-C won the JV match 2-0.

"This was a win we were counting on, so I'm glad we came out and played like we were the better team," G-C coach Jeff Sincroft said. "We still have a lot of room for improvement, and we don't have any time to waste with New Pal coming in on Wednesday."

G-C will next play at home Wednesday against New Palestine.

Pendleton Heights 3, Mt. Vernon 2: The Marauders got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but PH won two marathon doubles matches to clinch a close contest.

Bryce Bobb (6-1, 6-1) and Ben Bobb (6-4, 6-2) won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Marauders. PH won the No. 3 singles match in straight sets, and then won two doubles decisions. At No. 1, the Arabians' Ben Augsburger/Mitch Staley won a third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 over MV's Chandler Hines and Andrew Noble. At No. 2, PH's Sam McKinney/Evan Crooks won 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 over MV's Evan Smith and Nick Pham.

The Marauders (1-1) play in the Muncie Central Invitational Saturday.

Delta 5, New Palestine 0: New Palestine was blanked in a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup at home against the Eagles, but Dragons coach Chris Hardin was pleased with his team's play.

He said Delta will likely be a top-5 or top-10 team when the IHSTeCA rankings come out this week.

"We played pretty solid throughout the lineup," Hardin said. "We played them pretty tough, but just couldn't get the final point of each game."

Delta won the JV match 6-5.

NP is now 1-1 on the season. The Dragons travel to Greenfield-Central Wednesday for an HHC matchup.

Eastern Hancock over Edinburgh: The Royals improved to 2-0 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference with a victory over the Edinburgh Lancers.

Girls golf

New Palestine 195, Greenfield-Central 196: The Dragons won a 3-way match at The Links, beating Greenfield-Central by one stroke. Franklin Central was incomplete.

Medalist Abby Poole shot a 42 to lead the Dragons. Cassie Rooks added a 50. Sarah Rose had a 51 and Bailey Kamp a 52.

"First home match and we managed to pull out a win," NP coach Gregg Greene said. "Abby played great and Cassie played with pain in her left hand from an injury a week ago. Bailey and Sarah grinded too."

The Dragons next play Wednesday at Stony Creek GC against Fishers.

JV

New Palestine's JV girls soccer team beat Mooresville 3-1 Monday. Katie Villiger scored twice, assisted both times by Gabbi Pierson. Courtney Smith also scored for the Dragons on a free kick. Coach Bobby Holden also cited Delaney Frye's strong play.
