Tigers claim 1st girls golf sectional title

As always, the Highland Lake girls golf sectional came down to the wire where the winner was up in the air until the final scorecard was signed, turned in and added up.

Again there was a miniscule three-stroke difference between Union County and Richmond.

But this time, five strokes separated the Patriots from another team.

Hagerstown finished ninth as a team a year ago when Richmond beat Union County by one stroke, and on Saturday, young talent and personal bests made for a historic day as the Tigers shot a 330, won their first sectional title in school history and proceeded to the parking lot for a silly-string celebration.

“This is really great for us,” Tigers coach Lloyd Michael said. “Being a young team with only the one senior — and I really feel special about that for Kristen (Kenworthy) to have won a sectional her senior year. She came through for us there as the fourth player. We really needed that score and she posted that score — all five of them really had an awesome day.”

Kenworthy’s score was a difference maker, as she shot a personal-best 83.

“I was really proud of our team, because we just came here and wanted to advance, and to come here and win is more than we expected,” Kenworthy said. “We shot our best round today and I’ve never won a sectional. Since I’m a senior, this is a really good accomplishment and I’m really proud of my team also.”
