Smith named honorable mention all-state - Central Oregonian
January 14, 2012Crook County High School
Rhett Smith only knows one speed — full speed ahead.
For his efforts, the Crook County High School senior has been named to the Oregonian Class 4A all-state football team.
Smith, who started at fullback and middle linebacker for the Cowboys, received honorable mention recognition for his defensive play.
He was the only Cowboy selected to the team.
A three-year starter at Crook County, Smith was one of the Cowboys’ leading tacklers this year, as well as being one of the team’s leading rushers.
He was selected to the team even though the Cowboys finished the season with a 3-7 record, including losing their final six games of the season.
Smith was the only player from Central Oregon named to the 4A all-state football team.
Smith, a three sport athlete, is also on the Cowboys wrestling and track and field teams. Wrestling at 220 pounds, he has compiled an 18-3 record so far this season, and is sixth in the latest Class 4A rankings.
Roosevelt, the only other team in Special District I, had two players named to the squad. Running back Isaiah Jones was selected to the second team, while defensive end Antonio Bella was named to the first team.
J.J. Fisher of La Salle and Sonny Tupua of Siuslaw were named co-offensive players of the year, while Kyle Smith of Elmira was named the defensive player of the year.
Tim Bowman of La Salle was named the coach of the year after his team won the state championship with a 45-40 victory over Siuslaw.
