Columbus North volleyball places third in Jennings County Invitational

NORTH VERNON, Ind. -- Freshman Avery Wendel collected seven kills and sophomores Makinsey Summa and Janelle Peters each notched five Saturday (Sept. 8), leading the Columbus North volleyball team to a third-place finish in the Jennings County Invitational.
The Bull Dogs opened with a 25-12, 25-18 loss to Class 3A No. 6 Brownstown Central, then followed with a 27-25, 25-19 setback to Jennings County. CN rebounded to close its day with a 25-17, 25-23 victory over Ben Davis, moving its season record to 3-9.
"The biggest issue we are having is getting the girls mentally ready to play each match," Columbus North coach Caitlin Greiner said. "We came out not ready against Brownstown at 9 a.m. and remained sluggish all the way through the Jennings County match.
"Although the Jennings match was very close, we had several opportunities to end it early but kept letting them back in with unforced errors. We finally woke up for the Ben Davis match and beat them fairly easily. We let up at the end of the second game, letting Ben Davis keep the score tight, but were able to finish strong."
Greiner said she sees improvement in the Bull Dogs, who saw sophomore Karen Wildemann produce 28 assists and two block solos, Summa add six aces and sophomore Alexa Pelley contribute 17 digs over the three matches.
"We are getting better and better with each match, but we still have a long way to go," Greiner said.
Columbus North is back on the court at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 11) when it visits Perry Meridian for a Conference Indiana match. The Bull Dogs follow with a rematch against Brownstown Central at 7 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 13) on the road.
"I am excited to get another chance to play Brownstown again this week, and play with more fire and aggression," Greiner said.
